SUMMARY: How Dean decided on the perfect weapon.

Weapon of Choice

At five years old, Dean Winchester decided that knives were awesome, especially Daddy's hunting knife. It was big and shiny with a slightly curved blade and a long, black handle. Dean ran his hands over the markings on the handle in endless fascination, even though he couldn't read the engraving yet.

Daddy kept the knife in a special leather sheath that smelled musty and old but not unpleasant. Dean liked watching Daddy rub the knife against that big stone, sharpening it; when he was done, the blade always gleamed so dangerously that surely no monster would dare attack its wielder.

Dean was not allowed to touch the knife, though, Daddy had said, which to Dean seemed terribly unfair. It was Daddy's job to protect Dean and his baby brother Sammy. That's why he needed weapons; Dean understood that.

But then it was Dean's job to protect Sammy, too, especially when Daddy was away. Mommy had done it before, but now Mommy was gone and Dean was next in line. He no longer believed in those stupid angels from Mommy's stories. No, it was up to him, big brother and protector, which of course meant he needed a weapon. Even little Sammy had his diapers, which Daddy said were just as good as a weapon.

So Dean had a plan. He would practice with the knife till he was as good with it as that Zorro guy from those old movies he watched in their motel room when he got bored. Okay, so technically Zorro's knife was a sword, but when Dean held the big hunting knife in his hands it was almost as big as a sword anyway.

The last time Daddy had caught him with it would have ended in a painful spanking if Sam hadn't woken up and started wailing loudly the moment Daddy had tossed Dean over his lap. Sammy was a good brother.

Dean gripped the handle tightly in his fist and made a few thrust-and-parry motions, engaging an invisible enemy. Then he tried twirling the blade around, only to have it slip and cut clear across his palm. A red line welled up, and Dean bit his lip hard not to cry. Babies cried and he was a man now.

The knife clattered uselessly to the floor, which must have drawn Daddy's attention, because he came running into the room, yelling Dean's name. He took Dean's pudgy hand and looked it over, muttering something about "not needing stitches at least," which Dean was glad about because he didn't like needles very much.

In the end Dean's hand was wrapped in a bandage and he received a stern lecture with the promise of an added sore butt next time. He was glad to have escaped that fate this time, but he missed his Mommy's magical kisses. Daddy didn't do kisses anymore, and while Dean liked Sammy being all cuddly and soft, his slobbering baby kisses were a bit icky.

At five-and-a-quarter years old, Dean decided that knives were stupid, hand itching painfully. Daddy's shotgun was a million times better anyway. Maybe he'd watch more of those old cowboy movies instead of Zorro.

At six years old, Dean went with his Dad to an improvised shooting range, bottles on a fence, and bulls-eyed every single one of them so it seemed like the right choice.

EEEE!

I adore your wee!Dean voice. So matter of fact and yet such a little hero.

I loved that he recognized that Sammy was a good brother by howling as he was about to get it from John.

I also love that he went with the shotgun, and hit every one of the bottles. Mini!Dude.

It was fun getting in they tyke`s head. And then I wanted to pull out and cuddle him. :)

I think they had each other`s backs even then. It`s an idea I kinda recycled from my WeeDrabbles. *g*

Thank you so much for reviewing.

I kinda compare it to being slobbered over by a puppy. :)

Hehe, that last sentence made me smile :)

Lovely work on this and I like how the ending is so decisively setting a path to who Dean'll become. Nice!

I could imagine little Dean handling John's knife in exactly that way--with a little awe and reverence, but also a bit of relish and even Dean-logic.

I love how this story comes together--how all the pieces fit together.

As a little kid, 5 or 6, I was really fascinated by knives so I worked from that. My Grandpa (secretely) taught me how to throw them. :)

I love how this story comes together--how all the pieces fit together.

Thank you. For me Dean is more the gun-type and I needed a transition to that. I think Sam was supposed to be the type for blades - that promo-pic with the scythe - but then Jared turned out so accident-prone they wouldn`t risk it. *g*

this? is adorable. your wee!dean voice is perfect, and i love his knife=sword=protection equation, and why he decides a shotgun would be better for him after all.

Oh, man, that's just... hurty.

Great job. Sure explains Dean's penchant for guns. :D

Oh, man, that's just... hurty.

Thing is, a five year old might even think that for a moment but next up they gladly cuddle up to their parents again. Only poor Dean believes he has to be strong all the time already. Sniff.

Thank you for commenting. Glad you liked it.

Oh, Dean.

To tell you the truth, this breaks my heart into itty bitty pieces, but it's absolutely perfect, and a great look into wee!Dean's thoughts. *adds to memories*
