Is anybody watching The River? I tried the first two eps and while the premise itself might interest me, I find the characters all very bland or at best, douchebags. They could have at least tried to make the dude they're searching for more sympathetic so as to make the whole mission more sympathetic. And fucking shaky cam makes me nauseous.

Still, it's a "mystery" show and I'm in need for something fantasy/sci-fic/mystery atm. And I can deal with campy. So, anyone? Bueller?

Here! The River is on the very short list of shows I'm still watching at the moment. It's pretty stupid, and the mother is maybe the most horrible mother on tv. Ever. But I find the show really amusing, and it has Thomas Kretschmann, so that's another plus. And in the latest episode I even saw slight beginnings of slash between the main male character and that of Thomas Kretschmann.

So if you don't expect anything from the show at all but some mindless funny, it's the one for you. For me it has taken over the place of Ghost Whisperer.

eta: Oh, and I believe they are all supposed to be douchebags. The plot of every single episode so far was: One or more of them behaves like a douche. The Amazon tries to kill them because of it. They learn their lesson. They are allowed to see another day.

Dear God, yes. Her introdution scene in that bar where she ambushed her son with a TV team in two already made me go "good god, woman, you are a horrible mother".

Not that the father seems to be any better what with the implication that he simply lost interest in his own child once he realized/figured it wasn't the Chosen One or something. Yikes, worst parents ever.

Oh, and I believe they are all supposed to be douchebags.

Ah, okay. I was a bit thrown because I expect there to be usually at least one character that the audience is supposed to sympathize with.

I think it gets even worse. They are constantly in danger now and almost get killed on a weekly basis, and the son (Lincoln?) continuously wants her to turn around and seek help. She doesn't care. She goes on and on about how much she cares about her son, but she obviously doesn't care enough to let go of the husband who left her. I'm wondering though if this is a part of a bigger plan storywise.

at least one character that the audience is supposed to sympathize with.

I think that's Lincoln. And I agree with Katja: He's a lot less of an idiot since they've cut his hair.

What with her husband's spirit possessing the young girl, in all their places, I would have thought that a good sign the guy is dead.

Heh. Maybe I'll have the same reaction. It's not even that he bugged me all that much before. In fact, retrieving his beloved childhood teddybear was to me the most relatable action any of the characters took in those first two episodes.

Still watching it, but so far it does neither get worse nor better.
Though I like the son better, once they cut off his hair *g*

Anyway, I think this show would have worked better as a mini-series. I just
don't see this plot working for more than 6 episodes.
I mean what about their boat? Didn't it need some repair? Also
what about some food? And why would anyone follow those idiots into
a jungle that is out to kill them?

It is just a miniseries. Just 7 episodes as far as I know.

No, it seems to be a first season of 8 Episodes?

I really don't think there's going to be a second season. *G*

Probably not. But it's not written like a mini-series. It's definitely
"episodic". Which makes it really ineffective.

Ah, good to know. Eight episodes, I can deal with. At least maybe this will mean things won't get drawn out too much.

I can more or less deal with the plot but the shaky cam really bugs me. I don't think it adds anything to the scenes, least of all "tension".

I could see them gathering supplies on the way, fruit and stuff. Maybe they could even hunt an animal. But the state of the boat, less likely to be handwaved. It looked near wrecked when they found it and now they're merrily shipping down one of the trickiest, most deadly rivers still left. In totally unchartered territory. Uh-uh.

What I also don't get:
1) Why haven't they been obsessively watching these tapes Cole left behind? I know it's a lot but I would have thought that would be first order of buisness.

2) Why does the mechanic's daughter only speak Spanish even though her father speaks English and she clearly understands it perfectly? To annoy everybody? To make a statement?

3) Why does camera guy continue filming when they are physically being attacked? I'd peg him for the dude who'd throw the thing away and run for his life.

Yup, but getting food for so many people would take up quite a lot time. That they spend doing... nothing *g*

But at least the tv studio was still working perfectly *g*

Yup, also why don't they realize that there's obviously history between the producer and the wife? And why does nobody notice that the producer is deleting stuff? And who in their right mind would trust this guy anyway? *g*

Why does the mechanic's daughter only speak Spanish even though her father speaks English and she clearly understands it perfectly? To annoy everybody? To make a statement?

It's a MYSTERY!!! Also, why are sometimes subtitles and then again not? *g*

3) Why does camera guy continue filming when they are physically being attacked? I'd peg him for the dude who'd throw the thing away and run for his life.

I don't get why any of the camera men stay in the first place. They can't get paid enough for this shit *g*

Yeah, it was hilarious when the son confronted his mother in the Pilot about having (had) an affair and I thought "gee, I wonder with whom." *eyeroll*

And who in their right mind would trust this guy anyway? *g*

It was also very funny when the son wanted to give every a chance to turn around and leave and producer guy was all "nooo, we need security dude and the mechanic family" - which is actually a fair point - but he clearly seemed to imply they needed EVERYONE to continue on this journey. Um, producer dude, except you and the camera guy, you fulfil no visible function whatsoever. *g*

It's a MYSTERY!!! Also, why are sometimes subtitles and then again not? *g*

Good question. :D

I don't get why any of the camera men stay in the first place. They can't get paid enough for this shit *g*

There is only one left, though, isn't there? The other got killed right away?

I don't know what they are planning to do anyways, do they transmit their filmed material already? Do they just shoot stuff in the vain hope they'll return with their lifes and put it on air someday? Do they even still have contact with the outside world? Because if not, watch out, brave explorers because in this universe, you're apparently get declared legally dead after only six months instead of a couple years (which I believe is the norm).

It's a guilty pleasure for me :) Strange show - i don't like all the characters, Spanish girl annoys me and the son is awful. And don't let me start on the mother. But i'm still watching. Cause i was told there's only 8 eps. 8 eps i can do.

Yup, 8 eps is manageable. And I like the mystery aspect.

Well, considering how bad the ratings are, I wouldn't get attached to it much, just a fair warning.

Oh, that's not a problem. I'm fine if it's just basically a miniseries. :)
