Stargate Universe is already on German TV? And both Pay-TV and free TV pretty much at the same time? That was quick. Other shows *cough SPN cough* are dragging behind two or three Seasons from the US airing and this one makes it before it has even finished airing the first one?

A friend asked me my opinion on the show since she enjoyed the previous Stargate ones and in the interest of being fair I tried to recall if I had liked anything so far. The result? I actually really liked only one scene (and mostly because I love the musical cues in it and since they are using it for the trailers I was reminded of that): namely THIS

I guess that is not a glowing recommendation for ten episodes total. But I really fucking love the music in this scene.

I can't recall ever being so totally disappointed in a programme the way I have been with SGU.

So much potential totally wasted. When it comes back on after it's lengthy break I'm afraid I won't be bothering to watch.

I wasn't having that many expectations even, just simple entertainment but somehow the Pilot didn't grab me already. And when that happens, I know it won't work out.

I'll probably give it a few more eps, simply because I need some Sci-Fi-fix and there is nothing else on atm. Sigh.

From what little I know about TV companies and programming, they must have bought/sold SGU very cheaply or it wouldn't cross the ocean so soon. Or it was part of a package deal the studios were given or had to take in order to get other stuff. Could be wrong, could be the execs loved it.

Very possible of course. It is the network that also aired all the other Stargates and BSG so maybe they have an exclusive deal with Skiffy.

Poor suckers - or it becomes so successful in Europe that SGU goes on for longer due to fen and / or DVD sales.

I was really bored with the Pilot and the characters, oh well. In comparism, I loved the SGA Pilot. It was just more dynamic and fun. I know the SGU folks went for "darker and edgier" but everytime the stupid rape stones come out, my whole face moves into a scowl.

Where are the strong women????

What, you are not totally enamored with Chloe? *g* Or, whatever the hell Ming Na's character is called who got one of the most weaselly scenes ever. I thought she was supposed to be some kind of female Woolsey but they allowed Woolsey some dignity, not like:

"I totally challenge your authority, military-man"
"Okay, then I'll take your name out of the survival lottery"
"Oh noez, please allow me to belly-crawl back out here, Sir"

If they really wanted to inspired by BSG, they should have looked at Laura Roslin who did manage to put her money where her mouth was.

I mean, I don't need ballbusting hyenas - I hate female characters like that when the writing presents it as if only through putting down men, women can become empowered. It's totally possible to have a caring and empathic side and still have a spine.

But apart from the medic, I don't even know what the female charas roles are. That is something that really bugs me with shows. That they start out with a batch of characters and then try to figure out their uses. Isn't that ass-backwards? Shouldn't they think of ideas what kind of characters they want, what their purpose in the story is gonna be and THEN write them in?

one who's a cheap, never-finished-school copy of McKay

And Rush is supposed to be a psychotic version of McKay, I guess so they have two. Yet still there are episodes like when the ship loses power and is about to be flying into a sun and me thinky "okay, they'll recharge on solar energy" which of course happens but noone, not even the super-geniuses even bring up that idea.

McKay would have been all over that crap, trying to build solar power collector's in no time. In fact, I can see EVERY SINGLE ONE of the Atlantis team thinking of the connection between solar energy and power, Shep, Teyla, Ronon, everybody. No one on SGU did.

Uhm, is it bad that I couldn't make it even through that one scene? I clicked on it to get a taste of the show but... uhm, it was kinda boring. Though I think I understand why Greer is one of the most popular characters :P

That scene I liked because it worked well within the episode and for once the humans contributed to their survival. Usually, they are on the verge of death, wring their hands a lot and then the ship saves them at the last second. They are just so damned passive.

Though I think I understand why Greer is one of the most popular characters :P

It's funny how you think "sure, he IS a raging psycho but those people would be so much better off if he were in charge". *g*

At least, he didn't lie to the whole ship for his own gain, try to murder another crewmate by stranding them on an alien planet or make a big show of power to immediately back down and beg for mercy when it comes to one's own life. Which nicely covers all the people IN a position of authority. Yikes.

He is?! I hated him so much, precisely because of what I guess he's liked for. Hahah, sigh.
