To boldly go...and make a fantastic movie

You know, back last year when I heard J.J.Abrams and new Star Trek movie, I wasn't terribly with the faith. But hats off because

Star Trek ROCKED!!!

Like a rocking thing.

The characters and how they brought them together. And of course Kirk and Spock at the centre of it all was fantastic. I felt there were enough nods to fans, enough inside jokes that they put a new spin on so it would be equally fulfilling for newbies and for people who know the verse. Bones. Kobayashi Maru.

Now, I guess with the success - as far as I can see it is widely received with joy - a sequel is a no-brainer? GOOD.

edit: And predictably over at deadlinehollywood there is wailing and gnashin of teeth on how the philosophy wasn't that of Star Trek and how 43 years of ST have been destoyed.

Jesus Christ, no it has not. Not anymore than the multitude of TV show episodes that played around with the concept of time travel and MULTIPLE alternative realities. Did the Star Trek universe implode because the mirror verse was going on simultaneously? No, I think not.

Some people cannot accept that others can take something and make it different and great! Even the original Trek had a "mirror universe" those people need to just get a life. From what I've read everyone has just loved the new movie. I'm anxious to see it. But it will probably be a while for me.

I can understand disappointment if someone takes source material and then thouroughly trashes it but to me the new movie made it pretty clear that it is not erasing the Star Trek universe as we know it. Just creating a new one to stand beside it.

So, of course you can either like or dislike this new one but it doesn't take away from the old one.

I have never been a hardcore fan but watched every single episode of all five TV shows and I was baffled by those statements.

It has been very positively received from what I can see, grossing much more than previous movies in the franchise which likely means it attracts mainstream viewers too.

Hope you get to see it soon, it's really a fun ride. I especially liked how they integrated the humor into it and how, for a blockbuster, there were some nice character moments.

Did it have plot holes too? Of course but the movie was entertaining enough for me to ignore them.
