Summary: He tried get Dean`s heart fixed - and then he tried it again. So, ten minutes after Layla left their motel room, Sam walks back in to see if the second time is also a charm.

A Miracle Right There

Hidden behind the vending machine – at least in theory - Sam had watched her leave. He figured Dean might need some room after, literally. She didn't stay long, and Sam wasn't sure if that was a good sign or a bad one. The last thing he wanted was for Dean to be brought down even more.

Then again, she had seemed quite agreeable when Sam had talked to her on the phone, readily promising to come and talk to Dean. And Sam didn't think she had had any malicious intent for doing so. If that were the case, he'd have never set the whole thing up.

Glancing at his watch, Sam counted down the seconds. Three-two-one, that's it. He waited ten full minutes. Should be enough room for his brother. So ready or not, Dean, here I come.

He took a deep breath and entered the motel room. Apparently, Dean had already resumed packing, as he was currently in the process of stuffing some rolled-up jeans in his duffel. He didn't acknowledge Sam's presence.

“Well, that was fast. Don't complain if I don't go setting you up with hot chicks in the future.” Sam tried for a smile, figuring Dean would probably respond best to some friendly joking. It was safe territory, after all, far away from possible chick flick moments.

However, his only answer was a non-committal grunt.

Sam bit his lip. Maybe the idea hadn't been so good, after all. At least, before, Dean had talked to him. “Things not go well?”

Dean sighed. “I know what you're doing, and I appreciate it, I do, but…” He trailed off.

“But what?” Sam cocked his head. He just wanted to help but felt helpless as to how.

“Saaam—“

The tone of voice was a clear warning to drop the subject, but Sam wasn't so easily deterred.

“Don't Sam me, dude. Did Layla say something or do something to upset you?”

Dean chuckled, yet it didn't sound particularly happy. “She told me she was fine.”

Sam perked up at that. “You mean she was healed after all? That's great, man, I—“

“No,” Dean cut him off, shaking his head. “She said she was fine with dying.”

“Oh.” Sam didn't really know what to say to that.

“Told me that if you gotta have faith, you ought to have it without the miracles,” Dean explained.

Sam scratched his head uncomfortably. “Well, I think,” he started, hesitantly. “She is right about that.”

“Hm.” Dean shrugged. Then he looked up at Sam. “Not really how I roll, you know? Miracles? Don't even believe in those if they are there, because they always come with a price tag.” He smiled wistfully. “At least, the anger-part of it, that I can understand.”

“I thought you said Layla wasn't angry? Sam frowned.

“Not Layla, her Mom,” Dean clarified.

A frown line appeared on Sam's forehead. “Why? Did she say something to you?”

Dean made a dismissive gesture with his hand. “I'm a stranger, and Layla is her family. Of course she is wondering why I deserved to be saved and her daughter didn't.”

“She said that to you?” Sam didn't even realize his voice had risen into a yell.

Dean blinked at him. “Dude, calm down. Like I said, it's totally understandable.”

“Then why don't you understand it?” Sam asked, sharply. Accusingly.

Obviously taken aback by both the question and the tone of voice it had been spoken in, Dean's eyes widened in confusion. “What? What are you talking about?”

Sam sighed. “To Mrs.Rourke Layla is more important because she is her daughter and you're a stranger,” he reasoned, looking Dean straight in the eye, “And to me you're more important because you are my brother, and they are strangers.”

“That's diff—“

“If you say, that's different, I will punch you in the face,” Sam threatened – only half-joking.
“It isn't different for them, it wouldn't be different for you if our roles were reversed, and it's damn well not different for me.”

Dean pressed his lips together.

Still, Sam could see that his brother, for all his stubbornness, was honestly mulling over what Sam had just said.

“Well, maybe.” Dean finally allowed.

Might not be a full victory but, for now, Sam was happy with it. He grinned. “See, you listening to reason? That's miracle right there.”

Sam didn't quite understand why Dean laughed at that, he was just happy to hear the sound anyway.

The Faith episode always got to me. It finally started showing a little of Sam wanting to hold on to Dean, of course then he fucked it up with Asylum but it was good while it lasted in season one. :)

This was awesome. I like the stories added on to episodes and missing scene types because there always seem to be so many hidden parts that need to be unraveled and revealed.

Asylum came before Faith, though, but I agree with the sentiment. I loved the eppy for Protective!Sam showing his love for Dean.

Thank you so much. Glad you enjoyed.

This is absolutely, positively, without a doubt exactly what happened when Layla left the room. *nods*

Such perfect voices for both boys that I could hear them ringing in my ears, especially Dean's. This is *almost* as good as a new episode. Almost. ;-) Saving to mems! Thanks so much for sharing such a well-written little piece. It say so much in just a few words. :-)

Loved this little tag and I totally agree with "erinrua". At least I would love if this would have happened after Layla left the room.
Very nicely done - thank you. D.
