Rating schmating

Seeing as my writing plate is ful at the moment, I thought it was time to clear up one question once and for all: ratings. :) Tres stupid, I know, but I still haven`t really gotten the fanfic rating system. The only thing I`m sure about is harcore NC-17. *g*

So can someone please explain to me what you would put to mild slash for example? Or Gen-stories that contain dark imagery and violence? What does schmoopy fluff get? Heeeeelp.

Ah, thank you. Will check that out. For future references I`ll probably go for safe-rating too. :)

Mild slash? Dunno, PG-13?

Usually, if the fic's just darker and angsty, and some swear words I'll rate it PG-13
R I use if there's gore and graphic violence and real, real, REAL angst
PG I'd use if it's a wee bit angsty.

Thanks. I`ve probably used crazy ratings so far because I wasn`t really sure about it. :)

This is my basic criteria for rating my own stories:

G - I hardly every use this one. No profanity at all. No dark themes or violence. No hint of sexuality.

PG - A couple of mild swear words, a kiss, a tinge of darkness or violence. Nothing more.

PG-13 - Most any amount of swearing, unlness it's absolutely unrelenting or extraordinarily filty. Mild sexuality - nothing below the waist if it's described. Dark themes or violence, but nothing too gory or intense.

R - Any amount of swearing. Dark themes. Any amount of violence, unless its really, intesely horrific. Sex that isn't described in anatomical detail.

NC-17 - Sex described in graphic detail. Deeply disturbing and graphic violence.

None of this is hard-and-fast or official in any way, it's just the way I rate my own stories.

Ah thank you, that helps. I tried to decipher a system from other rated fics but of course that was even more confusing since it`s a bit of an individual process. :)

embroiderama described the ratings exactly as I would have (except better). This is my understanding of the ratings, but what everyone else said is just about right, too.

I tried to access gwendolen's link, and it didn't work for me, but I found it here. I like embroiderama's definitions even better, though. :-)
