I used my vacation to finally read Captive Prince (original m/m fic and high fantasy with political court intrigue the likes of which would make Tywin Lannister pale with envy) but google-fu informs me it will be released in 2014? Noooooooooooo. Wouldn`t have read something ending on a cliffhanger right now then. Somehow I was under the impression it would be out soon-ish. Damn.

Which is not to say the story isn`t worth it. Unlike fanfic where readers come pre-invested in a certain story, original stuff like this has to make you care in the first place. And okay, that is the entire premise of, well, novels but this thing was first published in a purely fan domain.

Also, in the matter of "did he or didn`t he know?" (read the books and the nature of that question becomes obvious), after some internal debate I`m of the "nope, he didn`t/doesn`t". Why? It involves his one sacrosanct purity kink in life. He can use the emotional issue of his past that made him believe in evil as a tool of manipulation now but not the one that still feeds his tiny belief in good.

That was my impression too, based on two scenes that I can't now recall at all, I would have to reread everything for that.

I love the ending of the second book. There is enough payoff for me to be satisfied and that last scene gives me shivers everytime I read it.

There are some scenes that make you wonder if Laurent knows but IMO he wouldn`t have been able to keep up pretenses so consistently in the face of the man who killed his brother. What I get from him is some awareness that he fell in love with a carbon copy of his brother, just that this time he doesn`t feel familial love but romantic love but what attracts him are those stalwart and true warrior hero qualities all the same.

That alone would blow his mind somewhat but would do so entirely too much if he knew the whole truth.

The second book and their entire campaign together is really, really great. Laurent is a great political tactician and chess player, planning ahead and making alliances but Damen has the know-how and experience of military strategy and leadership that Laurent completely lacks so one alone couldn`t succeed.

The last scene was great and I`m dying to know what happens next. I mean, if it happened in an Akielon fortress, it would be clear that Damen could start launching a campaign to retake the thrown now but they are still technically in enemy territory and he has other commitments for now. Also, he can easily lose face now with either faction if he doesn`t tread carefully. In fact, he almost inevitably will lose face with one group, remains to be seen which.

However, I would like the next meeting between the two as true equals. I mean, they are basically in the same situation, the rightful heir to their respective thrones with that place currently held by an usurper.

I went and checked the story after reading your comment. I just skimmed through it but it looks like an interesting read. I hope they would become equals at the end. I have one question to ask though. I don't like stereotypes in bedroom. Is this fic like that ? I really would like to know before I dive in.

While there is some UST, actual sex doesn`t happen until very late in the game and personally, I found the scene to be very original and non-cliched, as well as in character for both participants. The spark of the scene came more from one character`s backstory that the audience is aware of but his lover, not so much.

It`s certainly nothing like the typical slave fic tropes, I would say.
