Right now, some colleagues of mine are really getting into Fifty Shades of Grey and stuff like that. And since, as we all know, that is derived from fan fiction, they are currently discovering concepts that were novel to us all...once. Today one colleague informed us about her wonderment and shock at learning what the term "felching" meant. I think I shocked all my co-workers by not only already knowing that but explaining a few more things in a dry, bored voice. :D

I find this all both amusing but also somewhat odd because it`s as if my fandom life and my real life collide in a weird Twilight zone way.

Hee. Ich befürchte, das würde den Shock nur verstärken. Wobei sie eh kein Englisch verstehen, also müßte ich das noch übersetzen. *uh-uh*

Yes, it`s one of the "harder" things and since my coworkers don`t read slash but only f/m, I was surprised that made it into a story somehow. Maybe it was even Shades, I didn`t quite get that. And I`m certainly not going to read it to check. *g*

How were they after the explanation? Asked more? Or pretended it'd not a big deal and they all knew about it too?
I can't stop laughing imagining their faces :)

They didn`t pretend to know or anything, just looked at me with eyes big like saucers. It was rather cute.

Scary when the two worlds collide! Amazing to me as to how many are picking up the series to read - just to find out what the deal is.

I read some excerpts online and I can read MUCH better fanfic for free so no thanks. Not to mention, none of it would be shocking to someone who has been doing fandom/fanfic for a while. Though I don`t quite understand the awe-factor in general audiences either. Surely this hasn`t been the first book dealing with mild to middling d/s.

I have to agree - it can't be the first book dealing with this but for some reason it's become the "go to book" for many.

I also agree with the fact that there is so much better fanfic out there that is for free and just plain better.

I never thought I would read some of the things that I have read but I have and you are correct there really would not be anything shocking about it after reading some of the fanfic that I've come across.

I have to say up until I found fanfic for Supernatural I had never even heard of it before (or some of the things that I've read) once I found a few stories and read them I was hooked - I've been reading fanfic for the last 3 years and I'm amazed at how many stories are out there and how many I have read just makes me gasp. I was reading so many stories and re-reading that I started a log of the stories I've read just to follow along with those that are WIP too.

Here's to so many more wonderful Fanfic stories that are going to posted over the next's few weeks!!! Yeah!

LOL. I can totally picture the scene. You being all "yeah, well, it's [insert detailed explanation]" in a bored voice, while reading a book or something on the side, and the others just...staring. XD

Hehe, that fits it pretty well.

And the thing is, I can kinda, dimly, remember back because before I came to fandom, I was just like that. And even then it was kind of a process, with extensive googling to find out what was what. *g*

It`s just funny that mainstream is now catching up to a place I found myself in when my wide-eyed little self read some more raunchy fanfics in the Buffy fandom.
